Social Sustainability Coordinator
Building a sustainable tomorrow
At BAM, we are currently seeking a Social Sustainability Coordinator to join our Scotland team, based in either Aberdeenshire or Inverness.
In this role, you will support the delivery of BAM’s social sustainability objectives across three key areas:
- Social Mobility – promoting employment, education, and training opportunities.
- Foundational Economy – supporting investment in social enterprises, local businesses, and volunteering initiatives.
- Social Inclusion – delivering community engagement activities and supporting equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives.
You will work closely with both internal and external stakeholders to plan, promote, deliver, monitor, and report on BAM’s social sustainability programmes and commitments.
This position offers a blend of office-based, home-based, and project site working. Please note that you will be required to be on site at least 2 days a week. - Support the development and delivery of Social Sustainability strategies, plans, targets, and Local Needs Analyses (LNAs) aligned to client requirements, project objectives, and National TOMs.
- Understands and is able to explain the relevant legislation and government guidance related to social value in terms of inputs, outputs, outcomes and impacts.
- Support Local Needs Analysis (LNA) development, alongside knowledge of using TOMs to inform decision-making, identify opportunities and risks for social value.
- Maintain knowledge of social value legislation, guidance, socially responsible procurement, and sustainability reporting requirements.
- Coordinate and support Social Mobility, Foundational Economy, and Social Inclusion activities, ensuring projects meet contractual social sustainability commitments.
- Build and manage relationships with clients, communities, supply chain partners, VCSE organisations, and internal stakeholders, delivering effective engagement and communication plans.
- Identify opportunities for spend with local procurement; spend with MSMEs, VCSEs and other marginalised/ social businesses, and negotiate and influence increased local and social spend with commercial/ procurement teams.
- Forecast the social, economic, and environmental risks related to supply chain partners, and effectively manage activity to mitigate risks.
- Set subcontractor/ consultant targets, and work with the commercial team to embed Social Sustainability requirements within subcontracts and negotiations, recording, reporting and overseeing related performance.
- Promote socially responsible procurement by identifying opportunities for local, SME, VCSE, and social enterprise spend, while supporting supply chain compliance and performance.
- Contribute to work-winning activities through the preparation of LNAs, bid support, case studies, and social value content.
- Produce case studies/ good news stories to showcase social sustainability supports; review and provide feedback during bid response development.
- Champion diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) by supporting project objectives, sharing best practice, and promoting inclusive behaviours.
- Collaborate with internal experts to understand company policies and strategies, initiatives, and evidence that can support tender writing in relation to D&I and share learning with project stakeholders.
- Research emerging trends and best practice in social sustainability, sharing knowledge across projects and teams.
- Collect, analyse, and report social value performance data, ensuring accurate measurement of outcomes, impacts, and progress against agreed targets.
- Use qualitative and quantitative data, providing reports to show the impact of service delivery.
What do you bring to the role?
- You will have an understanding of societal, industry and legislative drivers of social value and be informed by thought leadership, best practice and research related to Social Sustainability
- Ability to work well in a team
- A high degree of energy and self-motivation
- Ideally a degree level qualification or equivalent
- Previous experience in a similar role, with knowledge of social value and social sustainability principles, and performance measurement and reporting
- Experienced in stakeholder management/community engagement and managing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders and partners
- An understanding of Diversity and Inclusion related to social value and stakeholder management
- Knowledge and experience in National TOMs and expertise in using tools and techniques to assess social value outputs, impact and outcomes.
- Experience of supporting tender submissions, preparing case studies, evidence and gathering and reporting performance data
- Excellent organisation/time management skills
- Enthusiasm and ability to inspire, influence and engage a broad cross section of stakeholders
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Be highly competent in MS Suite – especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- A willingness to travel regularly throughout the region, and UK&I as required, and ideally a full UK driving licence
