Temporary Works Design Regional Associate

We are seeking a Temporary Works Design Regional Associate to join the BAM UK & Ireland Temporary Works Centre of Expertise. The Temporary Works Centre of Expertise provides design and technical support to the whole of BAM UK & Ireland, so our work covers a wide range of engineering applications. Our focus is on delivering safe, practical, economical, and sustainable designs, and you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of applications, including earthworks, earth retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, timber, and formwork/falsework.


You will lead and develop a team, from within the Temporary Works CoE department, providing safe, practical and economical designs for internal clients to a high standard of professional competence and in compliance with company procedures. 
 

This role can be based at our Leeds, Solihull, or Kilsyth, Scotland office, with a hybrid working schedule.

Making Possible

Being personally responsible for:

  • Leading a regional design team to ensure tasks undertaken are managed and executed efficiently and safely.
  • Allocation of design tasks to individuals within the regional team, and to other regional teams where workload fluctuates, ensuring appropriate allocation based on competency.
  • Ensuring that the design task management database is maintained with up-to-date and relevant data.
  • Representing the Temporary Works CoE when necessary at internal and external meetings.
  • Arranging and undertaking site visits when appropriate.
  • Ensuring regional team members carry out Temporary Works Assurance audits based on the agreed audit plan.
  • Ensuring that all chargeable work is identified, and charges can be recovered through the accurate recording and timely submission of timesheets/allocations within the regional teams.
  • Summarising quantities relating to design tasks and preparing for pricing purposes when required, including outline programmes.
  • Ensuring that feedback on design work is obtained, reviewed, collated, and saved in accordance with departmental procedures. 
  • Liaising with and advising other departments and project teams within the company with respect to technical requirements for proposed design and construction methodology solutions.
  • Ensuring the development of conceptual designs with a view to achieving safe, practical and economic design solutions in accordance with current standards.
  • Ensuring the development of detailed designs in accordance with current standards and codes and presentation of design output to high standards of professionalism.
  • Checking/reviewing the design work of other staff members and external designers in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Ensuring, where required, significant risk items are appropriately reviewed internally prior to close.
  • Carrying out manager duties and Performance and Development Reviews when required and identify appropriate development activities.
  • Providing recommendations and support to the Temporary Works CoE Lead in relation to succession planning and career progression of staff members within the department.
  • Taking a proactive approach to training and continuing professional development of yourself and others.

What do you bring to the role?

The following are required:

  • Proven experience and expertise in engineering design for structures commonly required by BAM UK&I, which may include earthworks, earth retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, façade retention, reinforced concrete, timber and formwork/falsework.
  • Proven experience in construction methods and processes.
  • Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or a related subject.
  • Chartered membership of ICE / IStructE or an accepted alternative professional institution.
  • Strong communication skills (written, oral and aural).
  • Understanding of BAM digital construction vision and its applications.
  • Experience in training and coaching.

 

The following are desirable requirements:

  • Construction site/project experience.
  • Connections with industry groups.
  • Experience in the technical management of a team.
  • Knowledge of modern methods of construction (e.g., DfMA etc.)
  • Ability to align Technical Strategy with business goals.
