At BAM we are looking for a Category Buyer to join our established team. This role can be based from any of our offices in Galway, Cork or Kildare. 


Purpose of the Role 
Being responsible for the strategic sourcing and procurement of construction-related materials, equipment, services, and selected subcontractor categories.

The role involves developing category strategies, negotiating commercial agreements, managing supplier and subcontractor relationships, and driving value through cost optimisation, supply chain improvement, and compliance with company standards and regulations

Responsibilities for the Role Include:

  1. Strategic Category Management:
    • Develop and execute sourcing strategies for construction materials, services, and equipment.
    • Manage the category spend, optimizing procurement costs while ensuring quality standards.
    • Conduct market analysis and monitor price trends to inform sourcing decisions.

  2. Strategic Subcontractor Supply Chain Management
    • Develop sourcing strategies for selected strategic subcontractor categories, supporting business objectives and project delivery requirements.
    • Rationalise the subcontractor supply base, establishing preferred subcontractor partners and approved supply chains across key trades and disciplines.
    • Lead subcontractor sourcing initiatives, framework agreements, and commercial negotiations to deliver value, reduce risk, and leverage group-wide buying power.
    • Drive adoption of approved subcontractor agreements across projects, monitoring performance and ensuring compliance with procurement strategies and governance requirements.

  3. Supplier Sourcing and Relationship Management:
    • Identify, evaluate, and select suppliers based on quality, cost, delivery, and reliability.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers to ensure a robust and sustainable supply chain.
    • Conduct regular supplier performance reviews and manage supplier development initiatives.

  4. Contract Negotiation and Management:
    • Lead contract negotiations to achieve favorable terms, conditions, and pricing.
    • Draft, review, and manage contracts to ensure compliance with company policies and legal requirements.
    • Monitor contract performance, address any issues, and manage contract renewals or terminations.

  5. Risk Management:
    • Identify potential supply chain risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
    • Ensure compliance with industry regulations, health and safety standards, and company policies.
    • Monitor market dynamics to anticipate and react to supply disruptions.

  6. Cost Control and Budgeting:
    • Monitor and report on category spend, savings achieved, and budget variances.
    • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and value creation.
    • Participate in the budgeting and forecasting process for construction projects.

  7. Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand requirements.
    • Ensure alignment between procurement strategies and project needs.
    • Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to achieve procurement objectives.

  8. Data Analysis and Reporting:
    • Utilize procurement data to generate insights and support decision-making.
    • Provide regular reports on key metrics such as cost savings, supplier performance, and market trends.
    • Use data to drive continuous improvement initiatives in the procurement process.

What do you bring to the role?

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
    • Professional certifications such as CIPS (Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply), RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), or equivalent are desirable.

  • Experience:
    • At least 5-7 years of procurement experience, with a focus on construction-related categories.
    • Proven track record in managing complex supplier negotiations and strategic sourcing.
    • Experience with contract management and supplier relationship management.

  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in procurement systems, ERP platforms, and Microsoft Excel.
    • Strong analytical skills with experience in spend analysis and procurement reporting.
    • Experience in strategic sourcing, subcontractor management, and supplier rationalisation.
    • Knowledge of construction contracts, commercial negotiations, and industry regulations.

  • Soft Skills:
    • Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
    • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
    • Leadership skills with the ability to drive change and influence stakeholders.
