BAM UK & Ireland have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Sustainability Business Partner. Reporting to the Environmental Sustainability Director, the Environmental Sustainability Business Partner role will focus on supporting the Transport Sector to develop and drive sustainability in their core strategic function. This leadership-level role is essential to connect operational strategy to our UK&I enabling service, being accountable for UK&I led strategic actions alongside priorities within operational units.   

The role plans and manages environmental sustainability resource based on an ongoing assessment of business and industry need and focuses on the continuous improvement and upskilling of internal stakeholders.  

It aims to provide a high quality and consistent service, delivering client excellence, supporting work winning, influencing and sharing best practices with customers and industry partners, monitoring performance and reporting on progress; showcasing BAM’s commitment to creating a sustainable tomorrow. 

Your team

• The role is hybrid working requiring frequent travel across the UK to projects and rail offices (Farnborough, Central London and Leeds).  Applications are accepted from individuals living across England and Wales.  

Making Possible

As Environmental Sustainability Business Partner, you will be responsible for the following:

• A key member of the Environmental Sustainability Senior Leadership Team (SLT). Helps to shape and develop service proposition, supports team growth and champions a culture of continual improvement
• Leads and supports a team of Environmental Sustainability specialists that cover whole-life carbon, BREEAM, nature and adaptation.  Ensures talent, skills & capability is sufficient to effectively deliver on the needs of Segment and contractual requirements, developed in line with individuals defined career pathways.
• Develops understanding of client and market trends, ensuring BAM continues to build a competitive edge.
• Works closely with Key Client Account leads, meeting with Client teams and understanding Client sustainability needs, to ensure BAM is able to deliver on expectations.
• Leads strategic work winning and tender activities, meeting with client representatives and supporting key responses. Collaborates with others  to develop bid collateral, bringing innovative ideas and approaches that support the business deliver a consistent and compelling message.    
• Collaboratively leads the setting of environmental sustainability OP targets with operational leadership teams. Performance against targets is regularly reviewed and reported back, with opportunities for improvement advised where necessary.  
• Coordinates industry insights and developments, policy and legislation for direction setting and to ensure BAM are consistently moving with or ahead of industry trends.
• Monitors team resourcing, including capacity and capability to ensure it is right-sized and able to support delivery of client requirements. Resource flexes as required to meet the needs of business including development of accessible shared resources.
• Collaborates effectively with cross-functional teams and facilitates business engagement to build trusting relationships, ensuring alignment of approach and reduction in the duplication of effort
• Develops and builds the capability and skills within the team, supporting webinars, workshops and training events alongside the ongoing development of training programmes.
• Champions best practice, and seeks out opportunities to promote and drive innovation across the Segment’s project and service lifecycle 

What do you bring to the role?

• Demonstrates experience gained in leadership roles within similar organisations (private and/or public sector)
• Knowledge of the key clients and assets within transport will be essential including transport Authorities (including TfL), Network Rail and major rail projects including HS2, Crossrail, EastWest Rail etc.  The ideal candidate has either worked for or alongside these organisations extensively
• A strong technical knowledge and experience across the breadth of Environmental Sustainability with an emphasis on whole-life carbon, nature and resilience
• Experience in directly managing multiple dispersed people and teams, preferably within a matrix organisation
• Experience of working with, and influencing, senior stakeholders internally and externally (including private and public sector client base)
• Ability to implement & execute strategy within  to form a coherent approach, and the ability to bring colleagues with you
• Excellent communication skills; an articulate presenter to internal and external audiences
• Evidence of developing and maintaining collaborative Client partnerships and supply chain relationships
• Significant experience of working within a successful bidding / work-winning environment
• Strong influencing and networking capability, speaking opportunities and profile raising with other stakeholders across the sector
• A high degree of energy and self-motivation with ability to identify, develop & implement solutions
• Enthusiasm and ability to inspire and motivate people across a business to get involved and take ownership, while supporting personal development and business objectives
• Demonstrable commercial awareness and impact of decision making with respect to all aspects of Sustainability (People Planet Profit)
• Strong organisational skills, excellent time management and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
• A respected role model for both the internal team and wider division
• Ability to multi-task and provide focus, direction and solutions where required
• A passion for and a commitment to sustainability issues with a specific focus on construction, delivering excellence and driving continuous improvement
