Design Manager

We are recruiting a Design Manager to join our team of secondees embedded within Rolls-Royce SMR, supporting RR-SMR with the integration of the BAM Site Factory into their overall plant design.

Your team

  • Primary base: RR-SMR offices are based in Derby, Manchester, and Bristol.
  • The BAM team meetings are most often in London. Typically approx. 5 days a month are expected in-person in the offices, but otherwise the role is predominantly remote.
  • The role is currently expected to run through to the end of 2026, with the possibility of an extension.

Making Possible

  • Delivery of sub-system DR process; design & programme management of RIBA 2/3/4 design development and associated governance process.
  • Level 3 & 4 plan creation & management
  • Responsible for managing and leading workstream/task-specific requirement development & feasibility review.
  • Key liaison point of contact / lead for workstream, governance stream or IPT.
  • Responsible for supporting the development of documentation and formal requirements to be incorporated directly into RR SMR systems.
  • Scoping and management of external packages of works
  • Management of interfaces and sub-system requirements capture and allocation.
  • Coordinating across disciplines & functions to develop specification and ensure integrated solution with focus on build certainty – should have good appreciation of relevant manufacturing/construction/assembly processes, legislation, standards.
  • Identifying risks & opportunities in sub-system that could impact design, build, and operational and managing treatment plans to mitigate/realise
  • Responding to technical queries from other design teams to support integration of their designs aligned to Site Factory capabilities & strategy.
  • Be responsible for identifying and managing relevant sub-system requirements and definitions, from high-level functionality through to detailed design definitions & assumptions. 
  • Ensuring correct parent/child linkage between functions and definitions, and identifying transverse assignment of requirements where needed to ensure coordinated design across systems.

What do you bring to the role?

  • Experience in leading medium to large teams and sub-let packages.
  • Experience in cross-cutting integration.
  • Ideal experience within MEP design delivery.
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in engineering.
