BAM UK & Ireland is recruiting a Head of H&S – Plant and Work Equipment to be based out of any UK office location. 

This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of work equipment safety and governance within one of the UK's largest construction and infrastructure organisations.
The successful candidate will become BAM UK's recognised expert for work equipment and machinery safety, providing strategic direction, technical assurance and specialist support to operational and senior leadership teams across the business.

Making Possible

Technical Authority
• Lead BAM’s technical standards for plant and equipment safety.
• Ensure compliance with PUWER, Machinery Regulations and UKCA/CE requirements.
• Maintain and communicate work equipment procedures and guidance.

Strategic Leadership and Governance
• Own BAM’s work equipment governance framework.
• Drive safety, compliance and performance improvement strategies.
• Keep BAM aligned with legislation and industry best practice.
• Provide assurance to senior leaders on equipment risks.

Operational Support and Assurance
• Act as the principal expert for operational leaders.
• Resolve complex technical and compliance issues.
• Lead audits and assess emerging technologies.

Incident Support and Learning
• Lead investigations into equipment related incidents.
• Identify root causes and share learning across BAM.

Competence and Training
• Define competence requirements for equipment related roles.
• Develop training frameworks and build technical capability.
• Mentor and support technical and operational teams.

Supply Chain and Supplier Assurance
• Set safety and compliance standards for suppliers and hire providers.
• Support procurement with technical requirements.
• Evaluate strategic suppliers for safe design and compliance.

Leadership of Technical Experts
• Lead BAM’s network of equipment specialists.
• Ensure consistent technical direction and promote best practice.

Industry Engagement
• Represent BAM in industry forums and working groups.
• Build relationships with regulators and professional bodies.
• Promote innovation and best practice across the sector.

What do you bring to the role?

Essential
• Extensive practical and technical knowledge of work equipment management within construction, infrastructure, industrial or engineering environments.
• Expert knowledge of PUWER and machinery safety legislation.
• Experience developing and implementing governance frameworks and technical standards.
• Demonstrable experience supporting investigations involving work equipment incidents.
• Proven ability to influence senior operational leaders and drive organisational improvement.
• Strong communication, leadership and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel nationally.
Desirable
• Degree qualified in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Safety Engineering or similar.
• CMIOSH or equivalent professional qualification.
• Experience working within major infrastructure, civil engineering or construction organisations.
• Experience leading specialist technical teams or centre-of-excellence functions.
