Occupational Health & Safety Manager - Energy Sector

BAM is seeking an experienced Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Manager to support our Energy Sector portfolio across England and Wales. Over the next 12 months, this role will have a strong emphasis on pre‑construction leadership, providing strategic and technical safety input during early project development before progressing into delivery‑phase support.
Making Possible
As an OHS Manager, you will provide competent, independent and proactive safety leadership, ensuring that health, safety and wellbeing considerations are embedded from project inception through to construction. You will guide project teams through the early planning, design and risk‑mitigation stages, helping to secure predictable, safe and sustainable outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
Pre‑Construction (Primary Focus – First 12 Months)
- Lead and facilitate design‑stage risk reviews, safety‑by‑design workshops and pre‑construction safety planning.
- Provide specialist input into tenders, early‑contractor‑involvement workstreams and mitigation strategies.
- Support development of construction phase plans, temporary works risk reviews and sequencing assessments.
- Advise project leadership on statutory compliance, risk management, and required safety controls before work begins.
- Ensure HS&W requirements, standards and lifecycle risks are clearly defined, communicated and embedded.
Leadership & Operational Delivery
- Lead, mentor and coordinate OHS Advisors across major energy infrastructure projects.
- Provide clear, unbiased safety advice aligned with BAM’s HS&W governance requirements.
- Maintain robust documentation and support 45001 audit processes.
- Carry out inspections, assurance checks and behavioural‑safety engagement activities.
- Support incident investigations, promote organisational learning and contribute to continuous improvement.
Data, Insights & Reporting
- Prepare monthly HS&W reports and contribute to predictive insights, trend analysis and improvement actions.
- Support development of leading indicators for pre‑construction and delivery phases.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work effectively with client teams, regulators, designers and operational leaders.
- Promote a mature safety culture, champion wellbeing initiatives and embed BAM HS&W standards.
What do you bring to the role?
- Proven experience as an OHS Manager, ideally within major construction, infrastructure or energy projects.
- NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) and Chartered Membership of IOSH.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels.
- Ideally experience leading safety‑by‑design processes during pre‑construction.
- Capable of leading investigations, audits and strategic HS&W initiatives.
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of the impact of HS&W decisions on programme, cost and delivery.
