Join us as a Trainee Civil Engineer and from day one you will be working with an experienced team making an instant contribution to running a multi-million pound project. You will be involved in and be learning all about the technical, organisational and supervisory side of construction projects. Whilst studying for a degree in civil engineering. You will also be assigned a mentor on site to help and support you through your apprenticeship. 

Our degree programme 

The 3 year degree apprenticeship starts at Level 5, where you will work towards an integrated degree apprenticeship (Level 6) and a BEng in civil engineering. You will also work towards incorporated engineer (IEng) status with the institution of civil engineers (ICE) 

Our apprenticeship is delivered at Leeds College of Building and attendance is through block release, typically 5 week long blocks spread across the academic year. The rest of the time, you will be working on site, getting involved in delivering exciting civil engineering projects, building your skills and experience. The academic start date for this apprenticeship will be January 2027.

Your Role 

Our engineering works cover a range of different sectors and apprentices are based within a variety of different teams working on a wide range of projects, so the type of roles that we have are really varied and interesting. From day one on site you will be with an experienced team of professionals, supporting you to learn and grow your career as a BAM apprentice. 

 

Civil Engineers are construction professionals who make up our site supervisory and management team. Our Civil Engineering Trainees work predominantly outdoors, turning site plans into reality. On a daily basis, our Civil Engineers provide instruction to our skilled workforce using specialist setting out equipment, maintain diaries of site activity and ensure that work is carried out safely in line with the company Health and Safety procedures . Your day to day will include: 

 

Project Support  

Collaborating with experienced engineers on the design, planning and execution of civil engineering projects 

Communicating effectively at all levels 

Assist with planning and coordination of site activities 

Maintaining good working relationships with client, designer, supply chain and others 

Technical Development  

Gain hands-on experience with engineering tools and processes 

Learn how to use specialist setting out equipment 

Problem Solving  

Learn how to overcome challenges on live projects 

Drive quality through effective planning and right first time delivery 

On-Site Experience  

Be part of real construction projects and work closely with our skilled workforce, applying your learning and knowledge in real world scenarios 

Maintain diaries of site activity 

Safety and Sustainability  

Help to ensure that work is carried out safely in line with the company Health and Safety. 

Maintaining high personal standards in health and safety 

Maintaining high standards in environmental awareness and behaviour 

Monitoring and recording delivery against the agreed programme and construction methods 

Ensuring that works are accurately and clear set out before work commences 

What you'll need

Academic Requirements 

GCSE grade 5 (B) or above in Maths 

GCSE grade 4 (C) or above in English Language 

3 additional GCSE’s grade 4 and above 

and  

HNC Civil Engineering 

or 

Level 4 Civil Engineering Senior Technician apprenticeship/Construction Site Engineering Technician* 

 *Due to funding and eligibility requirements, we are unable to accept applications from candidates that have not fully completed an apprenticeship at level 4. We are also unable to accept applications from candidates that are already enrolled on to a similar programme at level 6.

Hinkley - HPC

Be part of a major low‑carbon infrastructure programme at Hinkley Point C, one of the UK’s most significant new nuclear power stations. BAM is delivering enabling works, including large-scale earthworks, complex terracing, and the development of critical site infrastructure. 

This is a technically demanding and high-profile role: you’ll be working on excavation of millions of cubic metres of material, construction of access roads, and long-term site preparation to support future reactor construction.

 Additional Requirements 

Whilst this role is based at our Hinkley site. Due to the project nature of our business, candidates must be willing to travel and stay away from home when necessary 

As some of our projects are in remote areas, we also require all applicants to hold a full UK driving license.
