Head of HS&W- Behavioural Insights & Change

BAM UK & Ireland is recruiting a Head of HS&W- Behavioural Insights & Change. This is a part-time role, working three days per week, offers a flexible hybrid working arrangement, combining time spent at one of BAM’s UK or Ireland offices, home working, and travel across the UK and Ireland as required.

Making Possible

The purpose of this position is to:
• Build behavioural insight into the organisational design of BAM’s HS&W ways of working.
• Lead behavioural research and insight to understand the behaviours, cultures and working conditions that influence health, safety and wellbeing outcomes.
• Translate behavioural insight into practical recommendations across learning and ways of working.
• Support the learning and development of HS&W to strengthen our Everyone Safe and Well Every Day culture.
• Build behavioural science capability across BAM UK & Ireland.
• Strengthen how BAM measures, interprets and learns from HS&W outcomes, including the use of leading indicators to identify emerging risks and inform preventive action.
• Support implementation and evaluation of the Mental Health Joint Code of Practice and wider wellbeing strategy.
• Work with internal and external stakeholders, including clients and supply chain partners, to support learning, collaboration and industry improvement.

Resource – Organisation
• Build behavioural science capability across BAM UK & Ireland, helping leaders and teams apply behavioural insight to real business challenges.
• Provide specialist advice on the behavioural design of communications, learning and interventions.
• Build relationships with academic, industry and external partners to bring emerging evidence and good practice into BAM.

Resource – H&S Team
• Provide specialist behavioural science expertise to the UK & Ireland HS&W function, supporting teams to diagnose behavioural and cultural challenges.
• Develop practical tools, methods and guidance that help HS&W teams understand behavioural drivers and design more effective responses.
• Support the HS&W leadership team to identify opportunities for research, innovation and improvement.

Control Framework
• Apply behavioural science to the design and improvement of HS&W systems, processes and ways of working.
• Support implementation of the Mental Health Joint Code of Practice and wider wellbeing strategy.
• Identify behavioural barriers to adoption and help translate policy into everyday practice.

Culture
• Use behavioural and cultural insight to help embed Everyone Safe & Well Every Day in everyday practice.
• Champion and support the UK & Ireland HS&W strategy, helping embed health, safety and wellbeing into everyday ways of working.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, supply chain and industry peers, to support cultural and behavioural improvement.

Assurance
• Develop approaches to measuring behavioural, cultural and wellbeing impact. 
• Use leading and lagging indicators to identify trends, emerging risks and improvement opportunities.
• Evaluate interventions and use findings to support continuous improvement.

Learning
• Develop the learning strategy for mental health and wellbeing, using behavioural science to build capability and support practical application.
• Enable leaders and teams to use behavioural science confidently in their own work and decision-making.
• Identify and share behavioural and cultural insights, trends and good practice across BAM, clients, supply chain and industry partners.

What do you bring to the role?

• PhD in psychology, behavioural science or a related discipline, with a strong track record of applying behavioural science to complex organisational challenges.
• Proven experience leading behavioural research, change and improvement programmes.
• Strong experience influencing senior leaders and multidisciplinary stakeholders, translating evidence into practical strategic recommendations.
• Expertise in behaviour change, organisational culture, learning, measurement and evaluation.
• Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills, including real-world intervention design and evaluation.
• Extensive network across behavioural science, academia and industry, with experience building external partnerships.
• Excellent facilitation, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Experience in health, safety, wellbeing, psychosocial risk or high-risk organisational contexts.
